When people are asked what is the biggest frustration they face in building a new home, they often say it’s finding a team of talented, dedicated people who embrace their dream and help shape it into reality. Gaffney Homes is such a team and Mike Gaffney often tells how it came about:
“In 1974, Lenny Riggio redirected my life from one of large company employee to entrepreneur in a matter of minutes. Lenny started with a basement storefront with his partner supplying funds from his yogurt truck. By the time I met him, he had already created a chain of 20 college book stores built around innovation, risk taking, great vision, and dedicated employees.
He painted a future that I could envision and adopt as my own. I saw how he attracted energetic and dynamic people that would change the face of his industry. He treated us as partners and friends, and rewarded us based on our value to the company. In turn, we were extremely dedicated and loyal and worked harder for Lenny that anyone could imagine. Those qualities became a part of me, part of the experience of our customers, and the people we managed who joined us in bringing Lenny’s vision to life in Barnes & Noble.
I had many goals at that time, but this experience compelled me to create a company of my own with those same attributes. It would be 10 years before I discovered that homebuilding created the fire in me that I saw in Lenny. Gaffney Homes is a product of that fire.”
Mike built his first home in 1987 and the evolution began. His business philosophy can best be described as Building With Integrity.
